In the fall of 2020, we asked Highland Terrace students to artistically explore their thoughts and feelings related to the theme: “I Matter Because…”. Each student submitted a piece of art, along with a statement explaining their inspiration.

Title of Work: Self-portrait
Artist Name: Vivian Sherrard
Grade Division: Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
Artist Statement: I think the way my art relates to the theme is that it is a colorful self portrait. My colors matter because it’s what makes me…me! I think being colorful means having a lot of different dimensions. I chose to paint my portrait in the style that famous painter, Pablo Picasso, used because there is not wrong way to do it and I think it’s cool.

Title of Work: I Matter Because of my thoughts and opinions
Artist Name: Eleanor Town
Grade Division: Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
Artist Statement: It is a picture of me, thinking about my thoughts, opinions and the different things going on in the world.
